ORLANDO, FL /PRNewswire/ ~ Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) received a contract to complete the development of the Infrared Search and Track (IRSTO) sensor system for the U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F, marking the start of the Engineering, Manufacturing and Development phase of the program.
“IRST is a game-changer for air-to-air combat, providing a ‘first to see, first to strike’ capability,” said Paul Hey, IRST senior program manager in Lockheed Martin’s Missiles and Fire Control business. “IRST works with the aircraft’s radar to enhance the overall weapon system performance~even in a jamming environment~allowing the warfighter to engage threats with a high probability of success.”
Lockheed Martin’s IRST sensor system improves aircrews’ situational awareness, lethality and survivability, even in threat-intensive environments. The IRST is a passive, long-range sensor that simultaneously tracks multiple targets over a large area and is unaffected by electronic attack or radar jamming. The F/A-18E/F IRST is scheduled to achieve Initial Operating Capability in 2016.
The IRST system’s high-angle accuracy also provides the ability to track closely-spaced targets at maximum ranges. This information can be combined with other on-board sensor data or used alone to further enhance the pilot’s situational awareness.
This advanced IRST sensor system builds on Lockheed Martin’s mature and proven IRST technology, which was carrier-deployed on the legacy F-14D platform. With an active IRST production line delivering units to equip international variants of the F-15, Lockheed Martin is currently subcontracted to the Boeing Company to develop an IRST capability for the U.S. Air Force F-15C.

FYI Tidbits // New Navy budgets may sink plans for aircraft carriers
On the surface, the Navy’s cherished fleet of 11 active aircraft carriers seems safe from President Obama’s budget slashers. Conventional wisdom says the requirement to cut $488 billion from the Pentagon within 10 years will not necessitate banishing a single carrier because the president’s military strategy focuses on two carrier-dependent regions. While the fiscal 2013 budget may well continue 11 carriers, the Navy will be down to 10 or even nine carriers within in the next five years.

As a Virginian and as a defense industry specialist, am very concerned about the impact of Congress not passing balanced budgets or able to get its (our) financial house in order.
The failure of the Super Committee to reach agreement means that there will be mandatory budgetary cuts in defense spending beginning in FY2013, thus personnel cuts, per a study done by Stephen S. Fuller, Ph.D., of George Mason University for the aerospace industry.
FY2013 budget cuts being October 2012, just barely 10 months from now.
Virginia – we are at greatest risk in the country. Industry studies guesstimate that 123,000 Virginia jobs will be lost directly due to these cuts. Yet the impact will be much larger as Virginia and our neighboring states make up almost 20% of total cuts: 209,724 jobs are on the chopping block.
To put things into perspective, Baltimore is closer to Prince William County, Virginia (the southern edge of northern Virginia) than is Richmond our capital (52 vs 88 miles).
Most Maryland military bases are between Baltimore and the Virginia line.
Defense jobs at risk in the mid-Atlantic region due to mandatory defense cuts: 209,724
Many of the jobs in those neighboring states are filled by Virginians, and vice versa to some degree.
New Jersey does not border Virginia but it has a major impact on the function of many Maryland bases (such as Fort Meade) which in turn has major impact on many of the military functions and funding in Virginia ~ Fort Meade is home to the NSA, America’s largest intelligence agency and a major driver of the Virginia economy.

The exhibit area for Marine West 2012 will be adjacent to Camp Pendleton’s South Mesa Club. On Wednesday, February 1st, the first day of the expo, a Commanders’ Preview will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. All other attendees are invited to attend the opening ceremony from 9:45 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and visit the equipment displays from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
On Thursday, February 2nd, the exposition will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The tournament supports The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League and the U.S. Marines’ Youth Foundation. It will be co-hosted by retired Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps H. G. Overstreet and actor R. Lee Ermey, who is well known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s film, Full Metal Jacket, and as host of the History Channel’s hit show, Mail Call.
